MARK HOLLIS:
A NEW
JERUSALEM
mark hollis: new jerusalem is a booklet documenting and expressing the brilliant, nuanced, stubborn visions of a post-rock pioneer. As the lead man of 80s band Talk Talk, Mark Hollis’s musical legacy is tainted by a descent into isolation and abstraction, a jarring shift from commerciality to avant-garde. The book attempts to portray the spirit of Hollis with fragility, obscurity, and intense care, as his sound would liken. This is done by crafting the book in French-folded vellum sheets to make each layout interact with the layouts before and after. Not only does this portray the enigmatic artist conceptually, but it also creates a mysterious positive and negative space interaction that aligns well with the ethos of Mark Hollis’s music.
